Sleep is designed to restore us. During the night, tissues are repaired, organs rest or finish cycles such as flushing out toxins. The mind also uses the time to filter everything that has happened that day.

‘Sleeping on it’ is a great technique, but obviously you actually need to sleep—staring at the ceiling all night doesn’t have the same effect… When sleep is disturbed we can find our brains struggling to cope, memory slipping, feelings of anxiety, poor concentration, muscles fatigued, skin dull and eyes lack-lustre.

We all know that we feel better after a good sleep. What we may not realise is how many facets of our health are boosted by the simple mechanism of sufficient slumber.

We’ve all heard about the “beer belly” and the “mid-life belly,” but did you know that when our nervous system goes into overdrive, our body stockpiles fat that we could do without.

Stress in and of itself is a positive thing. It’s our body’s way of reacting to physical and/or psychological aggression. In fact, our bodies are genetically programmed to set in motion this survival response when stimulated. By releasing the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol, the sympathetic nervous system prepares to cope with stress.

These hormones are secreted by two glands located above the kidneys, known as the adrenal glands. When released into the blood stream, these hormones mobilize our body to respond to stress. Continue reading >

Stress… It seems to be one of the few conditions that most people, whether male or female and from whatever walk of life, will admit to.  It is distressing that so many people identify themselves as suffering from a condition that most would presumably choose to avoid if at all possible!

There are an almost overwhelming number of factors that contribute to the build-up of modern day stress. There are increasing demands made on the individual: it is not enough to have a good job, you must have a perfect family too.

Women must look as if they just shimmied out of a glossy mag even though they actually just fell out of bed after a night with a teething baby and a conference report deadline; men must not only bring home the bacon but cook it, whilst bathing fractious toddlers and writing poetry.

Do you see the spring through a haze of tears, with a tissue box surgically attached to your hand and your nose emitting a persistent deluge of protesting gunge?

Most Canadians love summers, so it seems harsh that so many people should be doomed to react unfavourably at the first glint of the suns rays.

Then there are the unfortunates who react this way all year round, persistently snuffling and sneezing, sometimes without even knowing what it is they are reacting to. If you wake up every morning with an itchy nose, irritated eyes or catarrh blocking the back of your throat, you know where I’m coming from.
