Nasal congestion - that 'bunged up' feeling often accompanies a cold
A blocked nose is a common symptom associated with viral infections such as the common cold or the flu. They occur as a result of our mucous membranes becoming inflamed and they can be eased using a variety of home and herbal remedies. This page explores the causes and symptoms of blocked noses, and provides an array of natural solutions to alleviate nasal congestion. There's also a Q&A service where you can get answers to all your questions.
Nasal passages are responsible for trapping bugs and pollutants. This is achieved in two ways. Firstly, tiny hairs line the nasal passages and trap dust particles. Secondly, mucus coats these passages ‘catching’ bugs, dust and other pollutants. These are then expelled as mucus is cleared from the body.
Causes of blocked nose
Exposure to large amounts of pollutants or irritants can lead to an increased production of mucus secretions from the ear, nose & throat (ENT). This is known as catarrh and, if severe, can lead to congestion of the nasal passages (as with a ‘blocked nose’).
If you are suffering from a cold and your nose is running constantly, the mucous membranes will become swollen and inflamed leading to a blocked nose or nasal congestion. When inflammation occurs, mucous secretion becomes viscous and production is increased, causing blockage.
When the nasal passages become inflamed, they are easily irritated and the body reacts with symptoms of itching, streaming and swelling. This type of rhinitis can be in response to a particular stimulant (e.g. pollen in hay fever), general congestion or an allergic response.
Tips to help make breathing through the nose easier
- Dairy products should be avoided or their intake reduced as they promote mucous production.
- Products such as buttermilk, cream cheese and yoghurt are the exception
- Include foods in your diet that are rich in vitamins and minerals and avoid eating heavy meals at night
- Vitamin C is especially important for extra resistance, as is sufficient rest, sleep and relaxation
- Avoid very cold drinks as they can encourage the formation and retention of phlegm
- Reduce exposure to cigarette smoke and household chemicals
- Use steam inhalation to help loosen mucous
- Use Echinaforce® to help fight colds and flu by strengthening the immune system.
Hebs that help
Sinna is an A.Vogel homeopathic complex that works to reduce the swelling of inflamed and infected mucus membranes. At the same time, Sinna stabilizes the level of secretion. In this sense, Sinna can be useful for the congestion associated with allergies.
Since Sinna contains ingredients that act on the mucus membranes and specifically on purulent discharge, it can also be used for congestion due to colds.
Sinna works at attacking the root of the congestion whether it be from infection or from an upset of the moisture level of the nasal membranes and it contains an ingredient that attacks the pain associated with sinus congestion (headache over the root of the nose, across the eyes and in the frontal sinuses).
Because Sinna is a homeopathic it can be used without fear of addiction for chronic sinus problems. It will not cause drowsiness nor does it have side effects.
Just as asthmatic symptoms are on the increase, so is allergic rhinitis!
The symptoms of itchy, runny eyes and noses are not just in response to pollen, but can be present throughout the whole year.
A variation on this theme is a blocked and stuffy nose with a tight chest, due not to a cold or cough, but present on an on-going basis.
These symptoms are often due to an inappropriate response of the immune system, loaded down by irritants, pollutants and possibly under pressure due to stress. People don’t want to wait whilst their immune system is rebuilt - they want to be rid of their symptoms quickly!
Allergy Relief Nasal Spray works within a few minutes to clear up a blocked or runny nose.
It is particularly appropriate to have a herbal version of a nasal spray as conventional ones can cause dependency and people may react to the preservatives in them.
Allergy Relief Nasal Spray comes in a sterile container with a unique dispenser, which maintains this sterility. It contains no preservatives. You can use it for as long or short a period of time, as you like.
Most colds cause a stuffy or ‘bunged up’ nose which clears quite quickly. However, if the sinuses do become inflamed, other symptoms can develop such as a throbbing pain and pressure in the face, which is made worse by bending forwards. This is known as sinusitis, a common condition affecting 30% of the population at some time.
How Echinacea Helps
Echinacea is a traditional herb known to aid the body in its fight against the symptoms of cold and flu. Supplements like Echinaforce help increase the body’s resistance to infection by strengthening the immune system, allowing the body to fight the misery of colds and flu.
