What is the difference between a Prebiotic and a Probiotic? |

What is the difference between
a Prebiotic and a Probiotic? PREBIOTICS: Prebiotics feed the good bacteria you already have. The gut is an amazing place. It has an internal surface area of more than 300 square meters about the size of a tennis court! This surface is lined by a mesh formed by approximately 150 types of bacteria, weighing 1kg.
In good health, these organisms live in balance and harmony with each other, and our bodies. The friendly bacteria promote good digestion, improve metabolism, work against constipation and bloating, and generally help you to feel better. When this delicate balance is disturbed, organisms such as Candida albicans start to take over. This results in a range of symptoms including tiredness, bloating, trapped wind, sugar craving and repeated fungal infections. A poor gut environment wont sustain good bacteria, even if you put in extra amounts in the form of probiotic supplements. It can therefore be ineffective to take probiotic supplements if you haven't previously taken a prebiotic, such as A.Vogel Vitality, to prepare a suitable environment for the friendly bacteria. PROBIOTICS: Probiotics have been available for a long time, refl ecting the general awareness that friendly bacteria can be good for digestive health. The reasoning is that a supply of good bacteria will help to restore the balance in the gut flora. However, more recent thinking suggests that while probiotics are useful, there is a need to act at a more fundamental level. There may be little point in sending in replacement troops if they are going to be killed by the same conditions that got rid of the original lot. Prebiotics are substances which improve the internal environment of the gut. In doing so they help to feed and support friendly bacteria, allowing the good bacteria we have to thrive and providing the conditions to make probiotics work better. |
