Hair loss in men

Many men are affected by baldness. In fact, hair loss before age 20 is not unusual. In men, hair loss is often genetic, but other factors may be responsible.

Causes of hair loss in men

Aside from genetic causes, hair loss in men may indicate a nutritional deficiency, toxemia (toxins in the blood), anemia, a thyroid condition or other hormone-related conditions.

Diet and hair loss in men

  • It’s very important to eat whole foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as brightly coloured fruits and vegetables.
  • Vitamins B5 and B3 help hair grow and can be found in beans, peas, cauliflower, soy, nutritional yeast, nuts and eggs.
  • If hair loss is caused by thyroid problems, make sure to eat foods rich in vitamin A and iodine, such as seaweed, carrots, spinach, first-cold-pressed oils, flax seeds, nuts and pumpkin seeds.
  • The following foods should be eaten cooked to make sure they don’t prevent the absorption of iodine: turnips, cabbage, mustard seed, edamame (immature soy beans), peanuts, pine nuts and millet.

Supplements and hair loss in men

The main cause of baldness in men is the overproduction of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone. This hormone, if produced in overly high quantities, will cause hair loss, especially near the temples and on top of the head (referred to as male-pattern baldness). A.Vogel Prostate 1 contains saw palmetto, a plant that helps reduce the production of DHT, thereby slowing the progression of baldness.

Bio-Strath contains 61 nutrients essential to health and more importantly, B-complex vitamins and minerals that promote hair growth.

Essential fatty acids such as Omega-3s play a significant role in hair growth. A.Vogel VegOmega3 is an excellent supplement for strengthening hair roots.

A.Vogel Stinging Nettle is a wonderful plant for hair growth, as it is rich in iron (for treating anemia) and silica (nourishes hair roots). It also helps eliminate acidic toxins and improve overall scalp health. While stinging nettle should be taken orally, you can also boil a bouquet of the dried plant for around 20 minutes, let it cool and massage your scalp with the liquid after shampooing your hair. Avoid using on blond or chestnut hair or on treated hair because it can give it a greenish hue.

Hair loss can also be caused by a poorly functioning thyroid. If medical tests indicate that the thyroid is working normally, it’s still a good idea to check for the presence of the following symptoms: cold sensitivity, lack of energy especially when you wake up, hair loss, heart palpitations and weight changes. These symptoms may indicate subclinical hyperthyroidism, meaning that while the thyroid is functioning at over 50% of capacity, you still experience symptoms. In these cases, it’s best to nourish the thyroid with A.Vogel Thyroid Support, unless you’re already taking levothyroxine (Synthroid®). Start with one tablet in the morning for a week, then increase to two tablets in the morning for a second week, and finish with three tablets in the morning as of the third week. This kelp supplement is the only seaweed tablet with a standardized quantity of iodine.

In cases of toxemia (skin problems, arthritis, pain, etc.), it’s good to help the liver properly eliminate toxins. The product recommended for this is A.Vogel Boldocynara. If you’re constipated, increase your fibre intake to make sure that the toxins are eliminated rather than reabsorbed by the intestine. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains are excellent sources of fibre.

If you’re taking medications, check with your doctor to find out whether hair loss is a side effect of something else. If it is, ask your doctor whether there are alternatives for the medications you’re taking.
