Life Depends on the LIVER
by Irma Schutte

... it’s a real multi-tasker!
When I first began reading Alfred Vogel’s writings, I was surprised to find how much importance he placed on the liver as a regulator of health. But then I slowly got the picture as I realised how much vital work this organ does; it’s a real multi-tasker.

Consider this:
  • It produces hormones, enzymes, cholesterol and bile which are all essential for health regulation.
  • It stores glucose to help regulate blood sugar. Athletes depend on this release of energy when they are active.
  • Your liver helps to build the quality of your blood by ensuring enough red blood cells are available as worn out cells die.
  • It can detoxify drugs, caffeine, alcohol and other environmental toxins from your blood. In this way, your toxic load is kept in check.
  • Your liver is required to screen all the substances you ingest and to only allow safe particles to enter into the circulatory system.
  • It can repair itself, provided the eating and drinking habits thatdestroy and irritate it are stopped and regenerative measuresare taken.
  • Your liver regulates fluids and temperature in your body. And, if that were not enough, the liver also has to filter about 600 litres of blood every day!

Considering the importance of liver function to health, it always astonishes me to see how people continue to burden it with certain foods and drinks as well as expose themselves to chemical toxins through medication, their work place or polluted environment. The worst culprits are alcohol, drugs, air pollution, hydrogenated oils, fatty foods and sugar.

One glass of red wine acts in our favour when taken with food. Two glasses becomes a problem; any more than that starts to become a toxic load. It can take the liver hours to clear the blood of alcohol when it is taken in excess. The typical hangover that follows is due to the dehydration of the body together with the loss of minerals, lowered pH and loss of B vitamins. Alcohol is not a friend of your liver.

The liver has a specific language to communicate its distress, long before it becomes diseased. Meridian therapy tells us that unexplained pain on the right side of the head, neck, shoulder, elbow, hip or knee is generally a sign of the liver complaining. Pain in the right side of the abdomen or just below the rib cage are also liver signals. Gout in the right toe or fungus growing under the big toenail can also indicate a sluggish liver. Constipation, a bitter taste in the mouth, vertigo, headaches, migraines, flatulence, bloated stomach, spastic colon and hemorrhoids can all point to the liver as a contributing factor.

As a matter of course, it makes good sense to attend to the liver to ensure a healthy flow of bile and lowered cholesterol. Cholesterol is a big problem for many Canadians due to their love of fatty meat, dairy products, alcohol, coffee and sugar. It is possible to maintain cholesterol at a healthy level by omitting certain foods, getting exercise and with A.Vogel Boldocynara® liver and gall bladder drops or tablets. This formula is a mix of five different herbs, all organic, pesticide-free and fresh. The main herb is artichoke (Cynara Scolymus), which influences the release of bile from every liver cell. The liver expels toxins through the production of bile, and is also necessary for the digestion of fats and oils.

Artichoke can aid in the lowering of cholesterol and Milk Thistle regenerates damaged liver cells. Another ingredient is dandelion - a natural diuretic, mild laxative and bowel detoxifier. Mint and boldo are also added to the formula to assist with spastic colon, wind, irritable bowel symptoms and indigestion. People who regularly take prescription drugs also need to support their liver function, and can do so by using Boldocynara® every day. Anyone who has had hepatitis, or any kind of poisoning, could benefit from taking Boldocynara® twice daily for a few months. Vogel advised healthy people to do a liver cleanse two to four times a year for six weeks at a time by using Boldocynara® and by maintaining a mostly vegetarian diet during that time. Drinking enough water daily is essential to aid the liver in performing its myriad of functions.
A
nd, I find that fresh juices are a wonderful aid to the liver – especially the juice of two organic carrots, two sticks of celery, one beetroot and one apple. Juice this fresh every day and drink on an empty stomach. If you do not have a juicer, enjoy Biotta Breuss juice, a wonderful mix of vegetables including a lot of beetroot, which is known to regenerate liver cells.

Don’t forget the mind-body connection. All the organs in the body are negatively influenced when we are stressed and unhappy, and it’s believed that the liver is affected by built-up anger. So do keep your liver in mind when choosing what to eat, drink and do. Start being kind to your liver now... it can be most forgiving!
